The Smiths

The smiths are a British rock band formed by Morrisery, Johnny Marr, Andy Rourke, Mike Joyce. Today they're known as a more 'Problematic' band due to lead singer Morrisery's views and are seen as a comparison to 'The Cure'. The smiths are still extremely influential, with influencing many subgenres of Alternative rock such as Britpop which exploded in the 90s with bands like Blur, Oasis and Pulp.

The cultural influence of alternative rock

Before alternative rock most music was blues and slower softer sounds but in the 1960s the music industry specifically in the UK changed forever. Rock music is big in urban areas with many rock bands of now and the past wanting fame. In the novel 'Utopia Avenue' by David Mitchell, despite being fiction shows a rock band in the 60's looking for fame. The influence of rock music has traveled far throughout the years with novels, movies, and series being made about the time period today. A big example of this is the novel and series 'Daisy Jones & The Six' which is about an American rock band in the 70s yet shows the influence of rock still being very relevant in pop culture all over the world today.

The Cure

The cure are a british alternative rock/goth band formed by Robert Smith, Michael Dempsey, and Lol Tolhurst. The cure, emerging in the late 70s were different from many other alternative rock from the early and mid 70s and were often compared to 'The Smiths' despite Morrisery having a dislike toward The Cure and Robert Smith himself and was very open about this. The cure are still active today and are currently about to go on a tour.

How Alternative rock changed music culture.

As I touched on in the beginning of the last slide before rock the music scene was slow softer sounding songs where the only emotion being portrayed was love, when humans experience much more than that. Rock was scene as "Devils music" When in reality it was just expressing different feelings in ways words cant describe. Many Rock bands that came out of the 80s didn't have that rock "sound" and more of had a softer with rock influences such as The cure. The cure was both a alternative rock and goth band who used soft vocals and more heavy instrumentals or uses soft vocals with soft instrumentals.

BLUR

Blur are a Britpop/Alternative rock band formed by Damon Albarn, Graham Coxon, Alex James, and Dave Rowntree. Blur is one the most influential Britpop bands out there, battling the first place spot with Oasis. (Blur>Oasis always) Damon Albarn is still very popular in the music scene and uses his britpop history with his band 'Gorillaz'. Blur used a lot of influences and in their first true 'Britpop' album Popscene in 1992 which used many 60s influences but seemed to annoy the general public since it was labeled a "Very english album".

How Alternative rock changed music culture.

Alternative Rock was mostly formed by ordinary people who wanted something to relate to, yet alternative rock has broken off into branches with Britpop becoming a branch of this. Alternative rock forming in mainly the UK showed light on a countries musical talents and styles which illustrated the range of UK music and voices instead of using music styles that originated from other countries such as blues and jazz which was popular up until the rise of rock. Britpop formed in the mid-90s which the main emphasis of the music was that they singer was british, but also to add a lighter and catchier sound to the 90s music scene with the darker more sad grunge in America and Shoegaze in the UK.
